Few figures in medieval military history occupy as complex and controversial a space as Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (c. 1428–1477), better known to posterity as Vlad Țepeș — "Vlad the Impaler." While popular culture has largely reduced him to the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, serious military historians recognize Vlad as one of the most tactically innovative and psychologically sophisticated commanders of 15th-century Eastern Europe.
