Battle of Bunker Hill
A Pyrrhic British victory that galvanized the American Revolution
June 17, 1775 Charlestown, Massachusetts Continental Army (American colonists) vs British ArmyOutcome: British victory (Pyrrhic)
The Battle of Bunker Hill was one of the earliest and bloodiest engagements of the American Revolutionary War. Although the British ultimately captured the colonial fortifications on Breed's Hill, they suffered devastating casualties — over 1,000 killed and wounded — demonstrating that the untrained colonial militia could stand against professional British regulars. The battle proved a strategic morale victory for the American cause and convinced both sides that the conflict would be long and costly.
