Queen Artemisia I of Caria

Ancient Greece (5th Century BCE)

Queen of Halicarnassus

Biography

Queen Artemisia I of Caria was a Greek queen who fought as an ally of Xerxes I of Persia during the Second Persian Invasion of Greece (480 BC). She commanded her own contingent of five ships at the Battle of Salamis, where she distinguished herself with her bravery and tactical acumen, famously receiving praise from Xerxes himself. While often mentioned in historical accounts, her role as a skilled naval commander and strategist is frequently underrepresented, typically overshadowed by the larger narrative of Greek victory. Her story, primarily recounted by Herodotus, offers a compelling portrait of a powerful female leader who navigated complex political alliances and demonstrated exceptional military capability in an era dominated by men.
